Captured on VHS: The UK UFO Footage That Defies Explanation
Written by UAP Files - Jimmy
For years, the conversation around unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) has been dominated by high-profile cases in the United States—declassified military encounters, congressional hearings, intelligence whistleblowers, the whole lot. But the phenomenon itself isn’t exactly bound by national borders.
Here in the UK, a quietly determined community of skywatchers, researchers, and witnesses is piecing together its own puzzle, bringing forward cases that defy easy explanation. One such case is that of Richard Fawcett and his rather remarkable footage from December 2000.

In the first part of my two-part documentary, we introduced Richard Fawcett, an everyday witness to something extraordinary. Over three consecutive nights in December 2000, Richard captured footage of an anomaly in the sky that left him so unsettled he sought answers from the police and the Royal Air Force. With no official explanation forthcoming, he placed the VHS tape in a cupboard, where it remained for 25 years. Never digitised, never seen again, until now.
Recently, Richard revisited his footage with fresh eyes, reigniting the search for answers. He contacted us at the UAP Files and offered us the footage. With the full tape now digitised, analysed, enhanced and preserved, this case could finally receive the scrutiny it deserved. If you haven’t watched Part One of the documentary, I recommend doing so before continuing here.
The Investigation and Enhancement
To ensure the footage was analysed to the highest standard, I enlisted the help of Peter Osborne (Truth In Focus UFO, YouTube), an expert in VHS restoration and digital enhancement. Peter and I have collaborated on several major UAP cases, including the Medellín Colombia UFO, the Kumburgaz UFO, George Knapp’s USO from Netflix: Investigation Alien and the Houston Lights UFO. His expertise in video restoration was crucial in preserving and clarifying Richard’s decades-old recording.
Peter’s work revealed previously obscured details, providing us with the clearest possible visuals. This meticulous process allowed us to analyse the footage in unprecedented depth, ensuring that no detail was overlooked.
As part of our investigation Tom Vernon (Tom Vernon UAP, YouTube) and I made the journey to Staffordshire to meet with Richard at his home, collect the VHS tape, record an interview with Richard in 4K to document his witness testimony and bring that footage back to UAP Files HQ to digitise and show our audience.
A Tactical Approach to Debunkers
As expected, skepticism followed the release of Part One. Theories emerged, with debunkers suggesting the object was Venus, the Moon, a Chinese lantern, or even a hot air balloon. However, rather than immediately responding, I had planned from the start to withhold some of the footage for Part Two—a tactical decision designed to expose the flaws in these knee-jerk debunking attempts.
Debunkers have it easy these days. With apps like Stellarium, FlightRadar24, and Satellite Tracker 3D, it’s a doddle to pluck out a conventional explanation. And, to be fair, quite often, there is one.
The trouble is, if you start with the assumption that something must be conventional, prosaic, or man-made, and work backwards, you’ll always end up at conventional, prosaic, or man-made. Even when the witness testimony—a rather important datapoint, you’d think—suggests otherwise.
If something doesn’t exist (in your opinion, or theirs), then it can never be the explanation. Non-human? Out of the question. And with somewhere between eight and ten thousand satellites overhead, five thousand stars visible on a good night, and about nine thousand commercial aircraft buzzing around at any given moment, it’s always going to be tempting to point at one of those. Because there will almost always be one of those in that general direction.
And, sometimes, it will be one of those. Of course.
But not this time.
Venus
One of the most notable claims came from Metabunk, where some insisted the object was Venus, simply because it was ‘roughly’ in the same direction at the reported time. However, their argument fell apart under scrutiny:
Venus would have moved approximately 14.5 degrees in the time the object remained visible.
The footage clearly shows the object remaining stationary for 58 minutes, pulsating and shifting shape but never changing its position relative to the roof pitch in the frame.
Both Venus and the Moon would have drifted significantly in the sky over that duration. This did not happen with Richard’s object.
These inconsistencies, along with the sheer length of footage—1 hour and 21 minutes in total—leave little doubt that this is not a conventional celestial object.
Hot Air Balloon, Chinese Lantern
Hot air balloons drift with the wind – They require constant burner adjustments to maintain altitude and cannot stay perfectly still for 58 minutes.
Chinese lanterns rise unpredictably – They are too light to remain stationary and typically burn out within 30 minutes, much shorter than the observed duration.
Wind affects all airborne objects – Anything lighter than air (like balloons or lanterns) would inevitably move with even the slightest breeze.
A stationary object for 58 minutes suggests something unconventional – Conventional explanations rely on natural drift or propulsion, neither of which apply here.
Distant Street Lamp
As we can see from this photo, the direction Richard was filming was up. In the sky. The photo below from a house sale listing confirms that even looking out form an elevated position (above the conservatory) We are still looking up. And crucially, when we examine the camcorder’s position that night, it’s clearly angled upwards towards the roof pitch—not downwards. The screen capture below confirms it. So, whatever Richard caught on film wasn’t some trick of perspective—it was up there, exactly where he said it was.
The Final Analysis
Part Two of the documentary provides the most in-depth examination of Richard’s sighting, confirming key details:
The first sighting occurred on December 15, 2000, at approximately 18:05.
The object was observed and filmed over three consecutive nights.
The full length of the footage offers an extraordinary 1 hour and 21 minutes of continuous observation which will be released publicly directly after Part 2 airs tonight.
The object’s lack of movement relative to the roofline proves it was not a celestial body or satellite.
Audio from the original VHS confirms the time and date, as witnesses can be heard verbalising details in real time from a clock within their home.
A report in the UK National Archives corroborates the event’s date, time, location, positioning of the witness and direction the object was seen, along with the description of the objects behaviour, as captured on the footage and from Richard’s recollection.
The exact filming location is known, allowing precise calculations of the object’s position in the sky.
With all this data, the case remains unexplained. It does not fit the characteristics of any known aircraft, astronomical body, or human-made object - a true UFO/UAP.
A Case for the History Books
This case is one of the most significant pieces of UAP evidence to emerge from the UK in recent years. Unlike many modern digital recordings, we have the original VHS tape, a credible witness, a definitive date and time, location, and an extended duration of observation. This is not a fleeting sighting; it is a well-documented event backed by multiple layers of verifiable evidence.
Even if you disagree with the timings, or the positioning over the consecutive days, or if Richard changed the timings on the cameras timestamp, none of that really matters. The section of 58 minutes is indisputable.
The full 1-hour-21-minute raw footage will be released in its entirety later today on The UAP Files Podcast YouTube channel under the ‘UFO/UAP Footage’ playlist. This allows the public to analyse and scrutinise the evidence for themselves.
Richard Fawcett’s decision to come forward after 25 years is commendable. His footage, once hidden away, now serves as a powerful case study in the investigation of the unknown. Thanks to modern technology, expert analysis, and a systematic approach, we can confidently say that this remains an unidentified anomalous object.

Quite interesting- the film footage is old school VHS which lends to it authenticity. The witnesses seem credible. I do believe from watching the interview on YouTube he seems to be telling the truth from what was seen and filmed. Hard to say for sure but definitely something out of the ordinary. Add this to the top of the gray basket as Stanton Friedman ( RIP ) would have liked to say.
